The Death Watch

Here’s another chiller from the May 1952 issue of Astonishing #13 with more excellent art, this time from Cal Massey. According to Lambiek, Massey worked from the late 40’s to the mid 50’s (the bulk of his output for Timely / Atlas) before turning his artistic focus to painting and representing the black community in the art world.

Good one! It's interesting how at the beginning the reporter seems like a good guy--not just "phoning in the story," but actually going in trying to find out something worthwhile...but then by the end he turns into a flaming asshole, ghoulishly grinning over his mental captions and sexually harassing a complete stranger!

See guys? NO means NO.

Karswell, you have limitless energy. What's your secret?

Heaven forbid I miss checking in here for a couple of days, 'cause when I return it seems like there is much more than could possibly have been crammed into a "simple" blog in a short absence.

AND you have one hell of an archive to draw on (Yes, I'm suffering some serious penis-envy here).

Cool stuff lately!

Or maybe it means some women shouldn't be such cold hearted witches of death? Come on! Give a guy a chance!

My secret: Work from home, when you get tired of schlugging the day job routine just open some comics and start scanning. Another reason why I started this blog was to break the monotony of stay-home cabin fever.

SHE'S ONE SINISTER SENORITA!

THE SKULL IN THE FINAL PANEL REMINDS ME OF SOMETHING I'VE SEEN SOMEWHERE ELSE BEFORE.

I don't think the reporter seems very sympathetic,he just wants to get a sensational story no matter what,he's dangerous, and that line about "plastering your puss" sounds very suggestive, probably even in the 50's(though Death sure is a hottie,i admit).as for Massey,i THINK he was black, but i'm not sure,Pappy posted a story of his a while back, ask him.
