Unless anyone has any objections, April 2013 might turn out to be Giant Monster Month here at THOIA. All the smashing, crashing, rampaging monstrosities you can possibly handle plus other BIG news! Kicking it off with an encore presentation of a favorite Ace tale of mine, first posted way back in Sept 2007, from the January 1953 issue of Baffling Mysteries #13. And speaking of giant monsters, has everyone picked up the new Yoe Books awesome Steve Ditko Monsters Volume One: GORGO collection? Come back in our next post to find out how you can win yourself a copy!

Beautiful. The only thing keeping it from being perfect I think is that it could have ended a panel sooner. Leaving him stuck with the monsters was a better ending than having him get shot by the most incompetent policemen ever.

Some fun art in this one; messy in places but with some great character work (the mad Nazi doctor, who looks a bit like Marvel villain Dr. Faustus, is really good.)

As most giant monster tales, there's some completely wacky logic going on as to when monsters appears, who controls them, etc, all in service of getting to the monster-o-a-monster-o fighting at the end. The image of the bigger monster just devouring the little ones is another wonderful panel.

"Men are driven mad by my beauty", uh, I'll give you the "mad" part!

Will we be seeing post-code stuff? I have a real soft spot for the Marvel giant monster stuff.

What might be the food that filled said stomach, or are we better off not knowing, (example, tanna leaf tea, eye of newt, etc.)

I like way-crazy gonzo bizarro art as much as the next guy, but some of this looked like it was pasted together from multiple sources. Clashing elements within even a single panel have the layered look of collage. That said, a lot can be forgiven after panel four page two, wherein this nutjob's Pier 1 decorative astrolabe is casting crazy-making shadows all over his own face. That's a way better mad science prop than that prosaic tear-off desk calendar, buddy.
