Vein of Irony

And here we go finally with one more tale from Charlton's The Thing series, the April 1953 issue of The Thing #8 to be exact... it's a vampire story full of bloody irony, and if you think that sounds forced and cheesy then just wait until you read it! Art by Bob Forgione who appears to have illustrated this entire issue, it's fun all the way, but not fun enough for me to want to blog any more Thing stories for awhile-- sorry Thing fans! Check back in the fall maybe.

This one is rather silly, got to love the vampire's dialogue though.
Also, if you're in need of a doctor, I don't recommend Dr.Acula. He's got quite the bite if you ask me.

No more Thing for a while, maybe, but some more horror/comedy would be fine by me!

Aside from how goofy it is, it's got to be on of the very few stories of the period where the monster is caught near the beginning of the story. Sure, it's all setup to get him to the hospital where the cops don't even bother putting up a guard for the vampire serial-mass-muderer (I'd rather not live in that town) still, it's different.

I love the completely unnecessary double needle and drinking out of a flask!

I liked the kind of blasé way they treat that final reveal. Like, you've totally seen it coming, they know you've seen it, and you know they know. So they go through the motions but it isn't at all climactic, it's just background information for the final panel and the off-screen denouement. Nice.

I love the busy splash panel though. That's my favorite thing about this one. I've really enjoyed this Some Thing theme (or whatever you want to call it), and now have one more reason to sit around wishing it was (maybe) next fall already.

Don't worry, I have plenty of stuff coming up that'll make you forget about the 'ol Thing... at least for a little while anyway. ;) For one, Frank Robbins up next! Thanks for the comments, and stay tombed...
